The Imperial Sand Dunes are the largest mass of sand dunes in California. Formed by windblown sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla, the dune system extends for more than 40 miles in a band averaging 5 miles wide. Widely known as "Glamis" and a favorite location for off-highway vehicle(OHV) enthusiasts, the dunes also offer fabulous scenery, opportunities for solitude, and a home to rare plants and animals.
Recreational Permit Required from October 1 through April 15.

Gecko Road is paved and has gravel campsites.
Dispersed camping is available on the east side of the dunes along the dirt road next to the railroad tracks. Vaulted toilets and dumpsters are available but there are no showers.
Camping in Limited Use areas (east and west of the dunes) must be within 300 feet of a route.
Camping within the Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) is permitted within 100 feet of designated routes
Dogs are permitted on leash. Dogs off leash are frequently lost as a result of being frightened by the loud motor vehicles and/or illegal fireworks. I recommend putting a glow stick or LED headlight on your dog at night so that they can be easily spotted.
Safety flags are required on all vehicles that are driven on the sand.
Red and Green Sticker vehicles permitted year round.
