Imperial Sand Dunes South, Gordons Well

Bureau of Land Management - OHV Area

The Imperial Sand Dunes are the largest mass of sand dunes in California. Formed by windblown sands of ancient Lake Cahuilla, the dune system extends for more than 40 miles in a band averaging 5 miles wide. Widely known as "Glamis" and a favorite location for off-highway vehicle(OHV) enthusiasts, the dunes also offer fabulous scenery, opportunities for solitude, and a home to rare plants and animals.

Recreational Permit Required from October 1 through April 15.

Activities

Camping

Camping

Camping is dispersed. There are no designated campsites. Vaulted toilets and dumpsters are available. Camping in Limited Use areas (east and west of the dunes) must be within 300 feet of a route.

Pets

Pets

Dogs are permitted on leash. Dogs off leash are frequently lost as a result of being frightened by the loud motor vehicles and/or illegal fireworks. I recommend putting a glow stick or LED headlight on your dog at night so that they can be easily spotted.

Motor Vehicles

Trail Finder Detail

The GPS map progressively increases detail as you zoom in to prevent information overload.

Trail Finder maps are a subset of the GPS map. Trail Finder maps of large regions do not include the lowest zoom levels. In most cases, the GPS map has two more layers of detail than the Trail Finder maps.
